In Spain, the Garante de Derechos de los Niños y las Niñas is an independent institution responsible for promoting and protecting the rights of children and adolescents. The Garante was created in 2011 by the Spanish government in response to the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. It was established with the purpose of increasing awareness of children’s rights and providing resources for children who are considered to be at risk or who have experienced abuse or neglect.
In the past few years, the Garante has been working to address a number of issues related to children’s rights in Spain, including:
Abuse and Neglect
The Garante has been working to raise awareness of the issue of child abuse and neglect in Spain. In 2021, the Garante published a report that found that there were over 12,000 cases of child abuse reported in Spain in 2020. The report also found that the majority of child abuse cases involved physical abuse, followed by emotional abuse and sexual abuse.
Education
The Garante has also been working to ensure that all children in Spain have access to quality education. In 2022, the Garante published a report that found that there were over 1 million children in Spain who were not enrolled in school. The report also found that the majority of children who were not enrolled in school were from marginalized communities.
Health
The Garante has been working to ensure that all children in Spain have access to quality healthcare. In 2023, the Garante published a report that found that there were over 1 million children in Spain who did not have access to adequate healthcare. The report also found that the majority of children who did not have access to adequate healthcare were from marginalized communities.
Poverty
The Garante has also been working to combat child poverty in Spain. In 2024, the Garante published a report that found that there were over 2 million children in Spain who were living in poverty. The report also found that the majority of children who were living in poverty were from marginalized communities.
The Garante has made significant progress in addressing these issues, but there is still much work to be done. The Garante is committed to continuing its work to protect the rights of children and adolescents in Spain.
